Deuteronomy 10:17-18

The words Great, Mighty and Awesome only begin to describe the God of the universe. Even typing this tears come to my eyes as I am humbled and stand in awe of who He is… God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM,” Exodus 3:14. There are really no words to fully describe Him.

Yet God has chosen to give us a picture of His character through these words… what a gracious God. He is indescribable and knows our finite minds can’t hardly comprehend who He is, but He chooses to communicate to us through His word to help us understand. And here in Deuteronomy He reveals a bit of His character: He executes justice, He cares for the fatherless and the widow, He loves the sojourner by physically providing food and clothing. He is the Great, Mighty and Awesome God. And beyond that… there is no god like Him for He is the God of all gods and the Lord of lords. None compare to His surpassing greatness! Creation itself proclaims the splendor of our God. The galaxies prove He is beyond our grasp. Scripture reveals the truth of who He is. As we reflect on who God is in this Deuteronomy passage we have two options in our response to Him:

Believe that God is “the Great I AM” and trust that He has offered us salvation through His Son to make atonement for our sins. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life,” John 3:16. As He draws believers to Himself, we turn to Him through the power of the Holy Spirit. We repent and believe in the salvation offered through Christ Jesus alone, by His grace alone, through faith alone. This was given to us as a free gift; nothing that we could have obtained on our own. “…If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved,” Romans 10:9.

Or the other option… deny that He is God of gods. Believe that Jesus was just a good, moral person. Accept some of His truths, but not all. Instead of following Christ, turn the other way. Pursue a life where “self” is god. Chase after lies. Put your hope in temporal, worldly things. Live in deception. Choose eternal separation from God.

Either way, the truth of who He is remains unchangeable despite our response. I’m so thankful to know that the truth of God does not depend upon my understanding (or yours), my choice (or yours), or my actions (or yours). Rather, He is who He says He is and that will never change. Scripture speaks to how His character has been evident and men without excuse from the beginning.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:16-20

So now the part you’ve been waiting for… so WHY are YOU going?

The Gospel is our reason for going. We are going so that these people, in the photos above, that we have seen with our own eyes, may know and believe the Great, Mighty and Awesome God that Moses speaks of in Deuteronomy. That we might be the hands and feet of Christ to advocate for justice here on this earth, trusting that everlasting justice will be accomplished by Him. We desire to care for the fatherless and the widow and love the sojourner with food and clothing. Our hope is that Christ will use our obedience to the gospel as an avenue to proclaim the gospel of Christ to those in Romania. We go so that the people in Romania might KNOW God and the power of salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone! Join us in praying for God’s work in their lives even now. Know that we are praying for God’s work in your life as well!

If you have not placed your faith in Christ alone, please read this short description of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and sit before your Father in heaven asking Him to reveal to you your need for a savior.

Recognize the truth of who He is… The Great, The Mighty, and Awesome God who is the just, holy and gracious creator of all things. Ackonwledge our state before a holy God: having rebelled against Him and being separated from Him, we are dead without Him. Trust that Jesus alone is able to remove our sin and restore us to God as he lived the life we could not live, He died the death we deserve, and He conquered the enemy we cannot conquer. Believe that we can be restored to God only through faith in Jesus as we turn from our sin and ourselves in order to trust in Jesus as Savior and Lord. Hope in eternal life with Jesus instead of turning away from Him walking towards the dreadful reality of hell.(adapted from https://www.brookhills.org/files/uploads/ThreadsBooklet.pdf)
